Hi there!

My name’s Christina and welcome to my personal blog. I’m a wife, mom and dog mom living and working in Toronto. Here I share my thoughts, experiences, reviews and favourite things.

Planning our baby’s nursery was one of the first things I was excited about when we found out I was pregnant. Home decorating has been a bit of a passion of mine for the last decade and the idea of having a brand new room to furnish immediately sent me into design mode.

Our second bedroom, which has now been transformed into the baby’s nursery, has its pros and cons. On the less-than-ideal side, the room’s tiny. We were working with an 11-foot by 9-foot room that wasn’t a perfect rectangular space due to a protruding closet and window nook. We were also limited to only one full wall, as one was occupied by the closet and the other two by large windows. But being the corner room with two massive windows facing southwest also meant great views of the lake and Toronto skyline, as well as a ton of natural light pouring in each day.

The only logical placement for the crib was obviously our only working wall. I originally wanted a matching Babyletto crib and dresser for the room, but after discovering their prices had risen and shipment was going to take about six weeks, we decided they weren’t worth the cost or the wait. Instead, I found much cheaper, in-stock alternatives by DaVinci Baby and we settled on their Colby crib and dresser, both in white. We loved their clean lines, and the simple white finish allowed us to get creative with fabric prints and other decorative pieces. The dresser currently holds all the baby’s clothes, accessories and diapering items.

While I wanted to invest in a rocking chair or glider for the nursery, we ultimately ended up getting a sleeper chair based on the sleeping situation that we were planning. A lot of our friends and family who’ve had babies in recent years swore by co-sleeping with their newborns (we were shocked too!) or having them sleep in a bassinet in their master bedrooms. But because we didn’t have the bed or room space to do either, we knew our best option would be to room-share with our baby in his nursery. Searching for a comfortable and stylish chair that converted into a sleeper bed was not an easy task. Luckily, I stumbled upon Article’s Simplis chair. The design was as basic as you could get, but dressing it up with a throw blanket and cushion gave it new life. We paired it with the Donis accent table from Structube, with the purpose of using it to prop a laptop or hold beverages and snacks.

The last piece of furniture that I decided to add to the mix only recently was the bookcase. My initial vision for the corner between the two windows was to put up two or three corner shelves, or a hanging plant. I hadn’t put much thought into where the baby’s books, toys and miscellaneous trinkets would go, and I eventually began to worry about where they’d end up. So I scrapped those original plans and purchased the West Elm Narrow Ladder Bookshelf. It’s the perfect size for that little corner, and still offers plenty of room for a growing book collection and a few new toys as he gets older.

When we found out we were having a baby boy, I asked Brentley what he thought about adding a few coloured accents to the room, mainly shades of blue. He surprisingly had a strong preference to keeping the colour scheme as neutral as possible. So that’s what we did, strictly sticking to a white, black, grey, cream and walnut palette. Since the rest of our condo already had a mid-century modern feel with touches of Scandinavian and Bohemian elements, we wanted to extend that same style into the nursery. Another goal was to ensure that the overall vibe didn’t scream “baby” and would still be age-appropriate in a few years, which I think we achieved. This was a long but fun and fulfilling project. We’re both so happy with the way the room turned out and hope our baby boy enjoys it just as much as we do!
